Depression

What is it?

Depression is more than just feeling sad, it is a persistent emotional, cognitive, and physical experience that can impact how you think, feel, and function in your daily life. While everyone has periods of low mood, depression becomes more concerning when it lingers, affects motivation, and creates a sense of disconnection from yourself, others, or things you once enjoyed. It can influence relationships, work, and overall well-being in subtle and profound ways.

Symptoms of Problematic Anxiety

Depression can be greatly debilitating if left untreated. Despite being treatable, many people do not receive care due to stigma, lack of resources, or self-management. Roughly 5% of the global adult population (about 280-350 million people), making it a leading cause of disability, i.e. work place and life dibilitation. It is more common in women than men and can affect individuals of all ages. Symptoms of depression can include:

  • Persistent Sadness

  • Loss of interest in your usual activities and/or not getting pleasure from things that you usually find enjoyable

  • Consistent Fatigue or low energy

  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or sleeping too much

  • Restlessness or slowness

  • Trouble focusing, remembering things, or making decisions

  • Loss of appetite and/or weight loss, or increased appetite and/or weight gain

  • Feeling worthless and/or negative self-talk

  • Feeling excessive guilt and/or feeling like you’ve let people down

  • Thoughts of suicide

Treatment

Anxiety disorders are highly treatable. Treatment may include:

  • Therapy (especially Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - CBT, and insight-oriented approaches)

  • Medication when deemed appropriate for treatment - pairing with traditional therapy than medication on its own shows better results and improvements

  • Developing and maintaining positive connections with loved ones

  • Lifestyle changes (exercise, healthy sleep, nutrition)
