ADHD

What is it? 

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both
children and adults. It is not caused by laziness or lack of intelligence; it affects areas of the brain responsible for executive functions. 

Symptoms of Problematic Anger

ADHD is typically diagnosed in childhood, but symptoms often persist into adulthood, with some adults receiving a diagnosis later in life. More than two-thirds of people with ADHD have at least one co-existing condition, such as depression, mood disorders, anxiety, and autism. Having a complete psychological evaluation if you suspect that you may have ADHD is very important due the variety of conditions that can occur with ADHD. Here are the most common Types of ADHD with additional symptoms present:

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Excessive fidgeting, restlessness, difficulty sitting still, interrupting others, and impulsive actions.

  • Combined Presentation: Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are present.

  • Predominantly Inattentive: Difficulty paying attention, easily distracted, trouble staying organized, losing items, and forgetfulness.

  • Difficulties regulating emotions, such as managing strong emotions which can
    sometimes result in outbursts.
    ï‚· Motivational issues.
     Low self-esteem after years of not meeting their and other people’s expectations.
    ï‚· Trouble with sleep, including getting to sleep, staying asleep, and waking up on time.

Treatment

Treatment for ADHD is very individualized and may include medication, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and ADHD coaching. With the right treatment, assessment, and skills people with ADHD can get find methods to work around difficulties they experience.  Specific therapists who specialize with ADHD testing and treatment are Susan and Dr. Sherd.
