Women's Issues
What is it?Â
At Authentic Connection, we respect and honor all gender-related concerns. We also recognize the specific hardships that specific genders experience. Women's issues pertain to the specific negative experiences both historical and presently that greatly impact women. Such issues include but are not limited to gender dynamics in the workplace and relationships, oppression, self-esteem, objectification, intimate partner violence (IPV), body image concerns and lifespan transitions.Â
Where Women's Issues Present
Women's issues occur due to negative systemic and cultural expectations and beliefs. These issues often lead to many mental health issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Though each country and region in the world has different social and gender norms, research has highlighted significant concerns for women in many forms that go beyond borders and culture. A small sample of such concerns are listed below:
-
Gender-Based Violence:Â 1 in 3 women aged 15-49 have experienced intimate partner violence. This includes sexual harassment, child marriage, and high numbers of femicides.Â
-
Economic Inequality: Women are overrepresented in poverty and underrepresented in leadership roles. Women aged 25-34 are 25% more likely than men to live in extreme poverty.Â
-
Reproductive Health and Rights:Â Millions of women globally lack access to contraception and reproductive healthcare. Maternal health services remain inadequate in many regions, and maternal mortality is still high.
-
Social Expectations: Many cultures and countries set expectations and resulting judgements on women that are can be stressful. Expectations can be for body image and beauty standards, aging, child/familial rearing, leadership, and how/when to communicate (being too bossy, favoring reserved communication).
